I had a dream that as an adult I discovered a huge amount of tissues shoved deep in both of my ears. I had no recollection of putting them there myself. There was a lot of it, and I started pulling it out of my right ear— but some was so deep I couldn’t get it out without help. I noticed I was starting to hear things I’d never heard before. My mom noticed what I was doing and told me that she had put the tissues in my ears when I was a little child to help me sleep better, so I wouldn’t be disturbed (so I didn’t remember). My sense was she did it to help me, out of love, but it ended up hurting me. Just before I awoke my sense was there was still some tissue remaining in my right ear and my left ear was still stuffed with tissues.”
Dreams often carry deep symbolic meanings and reflect our subconscious thoughts and feelings. Here's a possible interpretation of your dream:
Ears and Hearing: Ears in dreams can represent your ability or willingness to listen—both literally and metaphorically. It might suggest communication, understanding, and the reception of new ideas or facts.
Hearing New Things: As you start to remove the tissues and notice sounds that you hadn't heard before, this may symbolize a newfound awareness or understanding in your waking life. Perhaps you are "opening up" to new ideas, emotions, or insights that you were previously unaware of or unable to hear.
Tissues Blocking Ears: The tissues in your dream can represent obstacles or barriers in your life that prevent you from fully hearing, understanding, or becoming aware of something important. Since the tissues are described as "shoved deep" in your ears, this could symbolize deeply ingrained patterns, beliefs, or defenses you were not previously aware of.
Difficulty Removing the Tissues: The act of trying to remove the tissues but finding it difficult without help might suggest that there are certain issues or blocks in your life that you cannot overcome alone. It highlights the need for guidance, perhaps from others, to resolve these deeply hidden or entrenched issues.
*Mother’s Role: Your mother’s involvement in putting the tissues in your ears when you were a child "to help you sleep better" suggests a protective mechanism that was put in place—possibly representing your upbringing or childhood conditioning. Her actions out of love and an intent to protect you might indicate that some of these barriers or defenses were formed as a result of well-intentioned but ultimately limiting influences from your past.
Mixed Outcomes: Despite her loving intent, the tissues ended up hindering you, hinting at the complex nature of protection and sheltering. Sometimes methods used to protect us as children can become limitations as we mature.
Your dream seems to be highlighting a process of self-discovery and increasing awareness. It suggests that while you might have been protected from certain distractions or truths in the past, it is now time to remove those barriers and face these realities. The assistance needed to fully remove the tissues implies seeking help, perhaps emotionally or through counseling, to fully gain clearer insights and understanding of yourself.
The dream might be urging you to embrace new perspectives, overcome entrenched barriers, and resolve past influences that were implemented out of protection but are now hindering your growth or understanding. The tissues that remain depict ongoing work and further exploration needed to achieve personal clarity and liberation.
